Just a week after EPA hearings on California's waiver request, California and the other states hoping to enforce greenhouse gas emissions restrictions on new cars have another hurdle to clear: a little-noticed provision in a House energy bill. This AP story in the Boston Globe explains
A provision that would bar such a waiver for any action aimed at climate-changing greenhouse gases is tucked deep in the draft bill that was circulated Monday among members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. It was drafted by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Va., whose Energy and Commerce energy subcommittee has scheduled a hearing on the legislation for Thursday.
We hope the representatives from the states looking to lead on greenhouse gas emissions--including the large California and New York delegations--can strip this troubling provision from the bill before it passes.
